Chasing Joy

"I am guiding you on the way of wisdom and I am leading you on the right path." Proverbs 4:11

ambivalent surrender

what i am really talking about is another place of surrender.

there have been many before, and will be many to come. it is all a giving up.  giving up my agenda. my expectations. my plans.  and it involves losses.  and unless those losses are honestly grieved-i can’t move on.  i am pretty sure that is a psychological fact for the entire human race.  i dare you – prove me wrong. and anyway, grieving involves simply being honest about how i really feel.

…..and the question ever before me; “is God real… or not?  does He love me… or not?  is He for me… or not?”

…..and the real answer-it is an ambivalent one.

i surrender to Your plan Lord, help me overcome my holding back!

i trust You Lord, help me overcome my fear!

i am thankful Lord, help me overcome my ingratitude!

i believe You Lord, help me overcome my unbelief!

interlude

”You say….you want…..diamonds in a ring of gold
you say….you want….your story to remain untold
your love not to grow cold.
all the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave
when all……I want…..is you.”

Bono’s deep voice rings out the lyrics in my head.  they come, not as intended by him i think.  i’ve been ungrateful.  i’ve wanted all these things mentioned.  at least a variation of them.

i read of others.  who’ve sold out.  who’ve been radical.

and i speak to myself-“you’ve not got what it takes to follow hard-to follow that far.”

the cost.

my wants.

the guitar and base play the interlude.

when all He wants is me.

i feel like i’m in that interlude.  that place of waiting-wondering.  how will the story be written?  who will write it?  the tension, the longing for the adventure worth fighting, the redemption winning.

yet not really. it grieves me to admit it, but it is true.  my heart is fickle, and the little gods still need taken down.  so many still to take down.

the interlude is playing in my heart and the One who gave all for love of this heart-He waits.

                for all
       He wants
is me.

Home

She’s come home.  But she doesn’t know it yet.  she paces, she cries, she scratches to get out and go back to where she came from.  not only does she not know this place, she does not know us.  so she does not know yet that she is safe and loved…….

 and home.

she didn’t ask for this today.  she doesn’t know how good it will be.  she had gotten used to her foster home.  she had gotten used to their smells, their routine, their noises.  she doesn’t know this.  today started out like any other.  it even included a bonus-car ride!  But then, then it’s a new car and the ones she knows left and here she is with these new people.  she likes these new people, but where did her old people go?

After about 3 hours, she settles enough to lay down.  eventually she settles enough to rest her head.  finally, she follows me into my room, i sit at my desk, and she settles herself onto my bed …… and sleeps.

Welcome home Lady.  we will love you well.

When has your day/life been interrupted-only to discover later that what you were given was better than you dared imagine?

Weighed and Found Wanting

“You’ve been weighed on the scales and found wanting.”  (some translations read deficient)

This was quoted in the movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’, but even before that, to King Belshazzar in Daniel 5.

We’ve been undergoing a bit of analysis lately.

~There was the dog rescue organization who conducted 3 interviews with references and performed a home visit.
~there was the police officer on the road headed up to our cabin
~There was the building inspector-inspecting the cabin for completion of the permit.

found wanting as fit dog owners
found wanting as responsible/safe drivers
found wanting as competent builders.

to be fair, the rescue organization did approve us-so we weren’t too wanting.  the police officer was lenient (dropped ticket from 15 over the limit to 9, even after i gave him the registration for our camper rather than the car and an insurance card that is 2 months expired).  the building inspector returned for a second inspection and did finally pass us.

amongst all this ‘analysis’ i find myself frustrated.  but the more i thought of it, the more i realized that constantly i am being weighed on someone’s scale-and consistently i am found wanting.  and even if i did actually move to Alaska far removed from all civilization, i would be left with myself.  i’m always measuring myself-and you got it, wanting/deficient.

and the choice ever before me is what am i going to believe.  who’s assessment is entirely accurate?

The One who actually KNOWS-He’s weighed me.  He’s not denied that i come up wanting, but He has declared that i’m worth it.

worth suffering for
worth emptying Himself for
worth dying for
worth living for
worth helping
worth loving
worth pursuing
worth furiously longing for
worth finding
worth loving

i’ve been weighed on the scales, and been found worth it.

i think i’ll listen to Him.

Courage and Harvesting Ice.

Recently we had church directory pictures taken.  I wanted us to take a goofy picture, with unmatched clothes and making faces.  I wanted it to be a picture that anytime someone looked at it they would laugh out loud-thus spreading Joy and fun for the sake of fun all amongst the congregation.

But we lacked the courage to follow through.  We ended up all wearing black-which was fine.  At least 4 times i quietly mentioned wanting a funny photo-finally the photographer (who was quite a professional i might add) gathered us to take one.  But when it came time to pick for the directory, this photo wasn’t given as an option.  When I mustered up the courage to ask if it could be used-the answer was no-it was taken horizontally and a vertical photo was needed.

Why could i not be more bold and direct and clear about what we wanted-even though it was so foreign an idea to the photographer’s frame of reference?

Even more recently, I wanted to miss something so that i could take the particular evening for a time of prayer.  Our house is very small, and my husband works from home.  There is just something about the freedom of being actually alone to sing and pray and just talk to God without having someone say “uh… mom?….who are you talking to?”  but i quietly mentioned the possibility of not being there (without saying why)-and the response… i interpreted it within and quietly ‘recovered from my moment of madness’ declaring that “never mind, i don’t know what i was saying, yes in fact i would attend.”

Why could i not be more bold and just say-not quietly-but assertively; “Sorry, I will not be attending ________night.” and not leave any door open implying I’m asking permission, or just toying with the idea.  Just put it out there straight and walk away and deal with the emotions later….during the precious alone time i would have had?????

Then there is the inward struggle with the way school has gone for the last few weeks.  One child is homeschooled.  We are in the middle of a family project-that would have been completed before school started if there had not been fire in the mountains -causing evacuations and delays at the beginning of the summer.  Thus, his school currently consists of…..do i even have the courage to share what it actually consists of?

i was reminded of Farmer Boy by Laura Ingals Wilder.  It’s the story of Almonzo as a boy (before he became Laura’s husband).  a quote that i latched onto early on in my homeschooling ‘career’ was this:

“Almonzo did not go to school that day.  He did not have to go to school when there were more important things to do.”  (p.50)

i remember that one of those ‘more important things’ was harvesting ice for the ice-box.  It wouldn’t have required courage for them to miss school for harvesting ice-for everyone knew how important it was for their survival, and everyone knew that when the conditions were right for it-you did it.  the conditions were outside of their control-they had to work within the weather. but of course back then, everyone knew that.  it was part of their culture.

I do believe with all my heart that school is important. I also believe with all my heart, there are more important things than school.  So, while the others are off at school, my youngest’s education is consisting of other things than the 3 r’s.  working alongside your dad-that is priceless education isn’t it?

so why is it that i cannot with confidence say-D-‘s school right now is carpentry, and how to respond to frustration and discouragement (the former from his father, the latter from his mother :)).  Why do i so quickly let the fear seep in and take over my thoughts?  or if i’ve conquered it within-why do i not speak of it boldly without?

it all boils down to a lack of courage to live out what the Lord has placed within.  How the spirit has directed and led.  regardless of culture.  regardless of whatever!  There’s this idol of other’s opinions on the matter that seem to overtake my heart i think.  and there is this quiet way about me-that i have prayed and prayed and prayed to be replaced with boldness.

 i have encouraged myself with stories of others’ who trudge a new and different path contrary to the desires and acceptance of those near them;

“No, I replied to their suggestions, ‘God is leading this way, and this way I go.” p.34 of ‘To a Different Drum’ by Pauline Hamilton

“Many difficulties have risen in my mind, they seem very great, the ‘crooked places’ seem very crooked, but it seems to me that all He asks is that we should take the one step He shows us, and in simplest, most practical trust leave all results to Him.  Mother, I know that very few of our friends will think I am right.  Those who don’t know the Shepherd’s voice themselves will be quite sure i am very wrong adn mistaken, but He has said, ‘Walk before Me, and be thou perfect.’  He knows, and He won’t let me dishonour Him by making a mistake and following my own fancy instead of Him.  if it is so, He will show it to me, but if it is His will, I must do it….”  Amy Carmichael of Dohnavur by Frank L. Houghton p.45

sigh-to be so couragous.  to trust His leading.  in just the little things-starting with the little things.  It’s something i so long to learn……

i am reminded of Jesus words to the disciples in the boat:

“Take Courage, it is I”

He offers the courage for me to take.  He doesn’t say’ “Have courage, be courageous”  (tho He does say that elsewhere-like to Joshua.) no in these cases it’s: “Take!”  which means it’s something i don’t have already.

i don’t know how to be courageous.  Nevertheless, i do have hope that i can learn how to take courage from the One whom i so long to follow where He is currently leading.

 because learning comes with practice and repetition.  and if the Lord would grant that plea for boldness to just be so….natural;

well then, what would i need Him for?

He has said; “blessed are the poor in spirit”

which means that joy, once again, will not be found with an instant personality change.  but with having received courage to harvest the ice. And i will instantly know where the Glory goes-to my Strength who has come to my aid….again.  And I will thank Him.

Socks and other hard things.

O Lord, the king rejoices in your strength.
How great is his joy in the victories you give! (psalm 21)

my youngest needs confidence.  his own experiences.  to find his own way, the path meant for him.  he’s 7, but young.  Recently he had his first day of Thursday school.  He is homeschooled, but on Thursdays he goes to school for art, science, spanish, etc…  This is his first year with this particular program.  He will have to change rooms and even buildings for each class. No one else has had this experience.  It seems like a grownup thing and he’s a little guy.  It will be hard for him, and my heart aches with that momma ache for him.  Driving away i fumble out a prayer-the Lord knows how to translate into the words i can’t find.  He knows that my desire for my boy is that he would experience the Lord’s help personally-but that means needing the Lord’s help.  That he would grow in confidence and courage-experiencing the joy of ‘i did it!  i made it thru!’  but that means something difficult to do or to make through.   i wait in anticipation for that moment when i pick him up and he grins ear to ear.  Then i will know the Lord has once more granted victory for my son.  i just know it may not happen today-it is a journey after all.

my middle boy has known Jesus’ help countless times.  he needed it on his first day to get shoes on that he had not been able to wear since the fires.  the Lord granted him victory that day.  today he’s tired.  today the socks aren’t working.  he snapped at his brother who was talking through what was before him with ‘i don’t care about that-i have to get socks on right now.’  ugh.  That was a tough one.  But i did side with the younger one this time-his needs are important too.  All the while praying-we need to leave now, please Lord help this pair to work.  This boy has seen victory over and over and over again.  It’s a daily need for him in this world.  He got them on, and-we did make it to morning recess-vital for success for him at school each day.  but still as he sauntered off to the play ground-i called out ‘i love you’ and my heart felt that momma ache.  How will this rough start play out for him today?  i fumbled out a prayer for him-thankful again that the Lord translates these words i can’t find.

That momma ache comes for my oldest girl interspersed more now.  Going off to school doesn’t bring it up so much anymore.  When we’ve had a fight and she’s sleeping-i ache to communicate to her how much i love her in a way she can receive it-i keep failing at that.  Now it’s things like trips far away without us (New York, Washington state) Or a school dance, or advocating for herself to an adult, or a sleepover with a new friend.  Next year it may come the first day of high school i suppose.  As usual, we will do that hard thing, and i will fumble through a prayer.

i’ve heard it said (and maybe i’ve said it already here) as a parent i can prepare the road for my child, or prepare my child for the road.  my approach is the latter.  it’s a big big world out there.  and i’ve no illusion of control over anything.  and the only thing that is constant in this approach is that the preparation is different for each child-and only Jesus knows them intimately enough to know the path they need.  so we pray and follow and face these hard things……ultimately because these hard things have never failed to prove our God faithful.  not faithful to change them or make them easier.  no, He is faithful to strengthen us, to reveal Himself in a new way, to remain constant in His love for us, it’s not a tame love, but a good love…oh such a good love.

Oh Lord, this mom finds joy in Your strength, how i greatly i rejoice in the victories You give.  These daily victories You give.

The Joy of the Lord

 Psalm 21:1
For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. LORD, the king finds joy in Your strength. How greatly he rejoices in Your victory!

Nehemiah 8:9-10
9 Then Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “ This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

what is the joy of the Lord?  the joy of knowing the the Lord. of being known….by Him.  of having returned from exile, of reading His words?

Hebrews 12 says ‘for the joy set before Him, He endured the cross’

angels rejoice when one sinner repents.

from Nehemiah-they have returned, rebuilt the wall, read from His words, grieved.  and Nehemiah says to them, do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength and stronghold.

the concept of joy eludes me, i’ve been reaching for it ever since i read in John ‘no one will be able to take away your joy’; and ‘i say these things…so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.’  and then seeing in acts, after being flogged they went out rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for His Name..”  (John 15-17, Acts 5)

what in the world is it that would overcome the natural emotions associated with having been flogged and replace it with rejoicing?  what did that rejoicing look like?  that joy set before that would enable one to endure the cross, scorning it’s shame? it definately was not happiness.  Neither Jesus nor the disciples would have been happy about what was happenning.  this must be something else.

in the case of Nehemiah, the people were grieving after understanding God’s word.  i am thinking, grieving over how short they had fallen?  but Nehemiah tells them not to grieve, that the joy of the Lord is their strength and stronghold.

strength and stronghold.  Lord i want to get this, really get this at the core of my being.

is this preaching the gospel to myself over and over again?  the joy that is the result of having been saved?  Psalm 21 says ‘the king shall joy in Your strength, O Lord; and in Your salvation how greatly shall He rejoice.’  Psalm 28 reads ‘the LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart exults (rejoice exceedingly), and with song I will praise Him.

sometimes it doesn’t seem like salvation or victory or help has come….but never- is the fact that salvation and victory and help Ultimately and where it matters most-never can this be taken or undone.  is this once again, where the cross not only stills my questions (vs. answers them) but also that the cross is my source of joy that gives strength and is a stronghold.  could it be that once i grasp this-once my heart truly rests in this, i could actually endure being flogged and go out rejoicing?  it seems pretty far-fetched.  but then i remember that last year when i studied the book of Acts, i studied it as the book of Acts of the Holy Spirit, not of the apostles.  so if in fact i should one day face flogging-the Holy Spirit could overcome my heart with rejoicing-using that same Power that raised Jesus from the dead.  but in the mean time-it’s not flogging i face, but rejection.  and misunderstanding, and disappointment.  and fitting in, and letting go, and not belonging, and plywood floors and front yards full of weeds. and children who bicker. and people who want nothing to do with You.  and work that is exhausting.  and fires in the mountains.  and the fact that any proper English writer would use proper grammar and never start a sentence with the word ‘and.’  these are small things-can i be faithful even in these small things?  oh how unfaithful i am with these small things.  but the principle does work here.  the joy of the Lord, the joy that He delights in me; that His love will not fail; that there is no condemnation for those in Christ; that He counted me worthy to hang on that cross…even Me!   even tho like a 2 year old i whine about far too much.  my heart can be settled with Nehemiah’s words too.  I rejoice in the Lord, my salvation.  He loves me deeply and has rescued me from the pit.  it is right to grieve over my sin-it is right to let His restoration and forgiveness replace that grief with Joy.   its a process to go thru, not to avoid.

oh it does bring joy in the depths.

and i do thank Him in song.

Invisible

“Mom, i don’t know if it’s the fire or what, but I feel like i’m invisible…do you even care about me?”

this from my boy who gets the most of me much of the time.

but it’s been a week of fires.  both literally and figuratively. big and small.  and there is only so much of me.

i do know  the truth that i can not be everything they need me to be.  they will have to look past me to the One who will not fail, who always Sees them, and Knows everything.  Knowing it doesn’t make it less painful.

Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”?
28  Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable.
29 He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.   (isaiah 40)

even my way is not hidden.  oh grant Strength, my Jesus, for i am weary.

Hope and being settled.

set·tle

verb, set·tled, set·tling.

verb (used with object)  1.  to appoint, fix, or resolve definately and conclusively; agree upon (as time, price, or conditions).

We went camping this past week.  The timing was perfect.  School ended.  We spent a few days discouraged, tired, bickering, fighting, exhausted, regrouping…did i mention fighting??

My girl and my older boy had a rough year of fighting.  The days after school ended, days of extra sleep and lessoned responsibility did not change things between them.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is a novel by E. L. Konigsburg.  In it 2 children run away from home.  At one point something happens.  They don’t realize exactly what it is until later.  They became a team, adventuring together, rather than single individuals happening to be on the same adventure.   They still have fights.  But it’s different now.  I remember reading that and praying, Lord please do that for my own.

Anyway, back to camping.  We all started to regain ground exiting the mire of our weariness with the excitement in prepping for camping.  Up we went to beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park.  We popped up our camper and set up the tent for the older 2.

Ahh, rest.

That night it was windy.  Extremely windy!  The 2 were there in the tent together…. afraid.  The wind howling, the tent flapping and twisting and collapsing in, then expanding out.   They both woke up and endured together for a few hours.    Hours!  Finally we intervened and brought them into the camper and took down the tent.

Things are now different between them.  They have it settled.  They are on the same team.  Oh i am sure that they will need to settle this again…and again and again.  But one day i pray it will be settled once and for all.  There will still be arguments-for that is only healthy.  But it is different to argue on the same team, than to argue on opposing teams.

…..~…..~…..~…..~…..~

Settled.  I’ve been thinking about this.  There are some things the Lord has been settling for me.  And each time it comes thru some experience that i would never choose….but to have the thing settled is always worth it.

to settle who my provider is… might mean a lay-off

to settle where my source of joy is….might mean a loss of something that has brought me joy

to settle His sufficiency….might mean a deep experience of another’s insufficiency

That is the gift of suffering, the hope of suffering.  To have a thing settled.  Resolved definitely and conclusively.  He has settled for me that He is both sovereign and good.  He has settled for me that i am deeply loved.  and in the facets of my heart where these truths are still murky, He gives me a gift of suffering, wind for strengthening, waves for cleansing.  Until it’s settled.  This is my hope in suffering, he’s settling something.

Therefore, since we are justified (acquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God) through faith, let us [grasp the fact that we] have [the peace of reconciliation to hold and to enjoy] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

2 Through Him also we have [our] access (entrance, introduction) by faith into this grace (state of God’s favor) in which we [firmly and safely] stand. And let us rejoice and exult in our hope of experiencing and enjoying the glory of God.

3 Moreover [let us also be full of joy now!] let us exult and triumph in our troubles and rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that pressure and affliction and hardship produce patient and unswerving endurance.

4 And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). And character [of this sort] produces [the habit of] joyful and confident hope of eternal salvation.

5 Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us. (Romans 5)
