i was at home in the city getting ready for a trip to the mountains.  reading this and struck speechless with the thought of the gift of the Holy Spirit. the security in being sealed by Him.   had there been time to write-i would have wrote about it.

we made the lists, gathered the necessities. and left.

left chaos behind.

chaos of the mess in our house, the messiness of relationships here and the messiness brought forth from our own hearts.

which is why the gift of the constancy of the Holy Spirit living in me renders me struck dumb…  and joyfully grateful.

the road to the cabin winds and my breathing begins to slow.

we have rest there.

i forgot that for a while amidst the work there.*

the rest of friendship and being understood.

the rest of quiet.

the rest of beauty-even with the burnt trees that we need to cut down, there is beauty.

children occupied for hours requiring nothing from me.

rising with the sun is natural here.

and i journaled this:

in Your Presence is fullness of joy…..
                Oh Mighty One, teach me how to live in awareness of Your Presence constant and consistently

…watching my boys build….God You have a path for my children, and You have chosen this dual life for them (city/country)

                and today

                                i am content.

*~~~~~*~~~~~*

Wonderstruck, chapter 2 p.37:

“The winding dusty path from Egypt to the promised land proves to be far more than a much needed shift in geography or transition from slavery to liberation; the great exodus is a journey in discovering the presende of God anew.

                Abounding love.
                                Generous provision.
                                                Exceptional patience.
                                                                Miraculous power.”

Oh My Father, i long to discover this Presence anew–
                                here at the cabin
                                                and
                                       back in town.

*~~~~~*~~~~~*

and then we came home.

plugged my phone in, charged it up and connected it to the world again.

began to put things back in order

and there is this;

a phone call left early that morning.  something ‘important’ (translate- a need of some sort, the needs here are so great…and so complicated)

and i sit and weep a bit inside.

and pray.

that the Overseer of my very soul, that Great Shepherd of the sheep.

would come and deal with me.

so i can yet again love them.

and be content.

*there’s this whole back-story…this our intended home damaged by wind and then fire.  these 10+years of ‘building’ later we have a cabin.  no utilities.  nothing finished.  but the roof keeps the rain and snow out and the windows and door keep out the wind.  We work on it when we can.

being still and grieving while “the whole creation is groaning”

last week a child at my daughter’s school passed away.  Sunday we received news that big Papa has cancer….it’s in the lymph nodes.  the prognosis is months to live.  2 years ago fire raged through our land at hurricane force.  our dear friends and neighbors lost their house.  we lost our cabin.  last year fire returned and took the rest of the community.  Tuesday tornados in Oklahoma.  2 elementary schools.  last year floods and tornados and all those waves and water on the East Coast.

the point of all this recapping is this.

grief.

grieve.

oh Christians, grieve.

there are no answers, no platitudes for times like these.  verses like Romans 8:28, yes it’s true.  but when you are standing in the rubble of what used to be your neighborhood…..its not the time for that.

its time for quiet prayers of strengthening of the inner man.  time for standing beside, holding and weeping together.  letting the wailing come.  for giving blankets and socks and tea.  for listening without drawing conclusions about a person’s faith…or lack of it.  and certainly no conclusions about what God is doing or saying.  oh from one who has grieved-i implore you-none of that.

  “Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm.  He said:  Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? ….. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand…..”

**~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~**

there is this book.  its quite an old book written by one who had seen great sufferring, and was experiecing her own personal sufferring.  it has brought me great comfort as it is not a book written ‘from the well to the ill and so misses the mark.’

**~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~~**

when i rode in the ambulance holding my 8 month old son….sat outside the door where my husband was inside helping to hold him down while they desperately tried to get the life-saving IV in him.  hearing his  cries of deep pain as they kept sticking the needle in again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again.  11 tries.  hours of trying.  there were no answers.  the prayers of faith pleading for the one who controls the seas to guide the doctors hand….  left unanswered….no, left answered with; “no.”  i did believe He could.  i did believe He would.  He didn’t.  why must a little one suffer so?  why must his mother suffer so?  if he is going to die, get it over with already, why this agony?  oh those hours took me so many places.  questions and accusations.  confusions.  he lived.  the questions have never been answered. (just new ones-like ‘why did he get to live?’)   but they have been stilled. it has been a journey-and the Lord who knows the number of hairs on my head is the One who knows how to still me.  Amy’s words:  “Thy calvery stills my questions.  a love that loves like THAT can be trusted with THIS.”    its not a place of answers, but of trusting that His love was proved at Calvary, and even this is not able to disprove it-though it tries hard.

if God hasn’t given an answer, lets not make one up for him.  let us rest in His love proven.  let us hold on to His goodness for those who cannot right now.  let us not fear the journey.  the questions. the absence of answers.

let us pray.

let us PRAY.

Hope Vinegar

this house. it’s dust filled crevices and too much spewing out of everywhere.  i sweep and sweep and still, who could tell?  the sink shines up and sets a good tone for a moment. if only for a moment.  and in the endless sweeping and washing of peed in clothes and sheets….i ponder.

this house is my heart.  it shines up nice and presents itself at times for the world.  but the stench of exhaustion spews out and stains everything and everyone it comes in contact with.  vinegar works every time-in the tangible mess of sheets. but what is the vinegar for my heart?  what will take this stench away?  both from me and those i’ve wrecked?

and i read Genesis-the entire book.  and it’s full of families.  families. that. are. a. complete. mess.
sons who murder, fathers who abandon.  love so fractured that it poisons instead of nourishes.

and i see me there.  and i see my own parents there.  and i fear to see my children there.

i’ve been taught to ask-what does this text tell me about me?  about God?

………………………….

God comes down.  He preserves what we try to destroy.  He rescues what we murder.  He restores what we’ve torn apart.  He shows grace-sometimes it feels even offensive-this grace.  (duh. grace IS offensive.)

but more than anything else these family portraits of Genesis tell me that

 He. is. Powerful.

Almighty, Mighty, Powerful God.

the God of Abraham=God who declares righteous by faith

the God of Isaac=God who provides the lamb

the God of Jacob=God who stays with His sinful people-wherever they go and who fills that heart hole (“bless me!”) to those clinging in utter weakness.  the God who wounds to heal.

the God of me=God who never lets go and is powerful enough to overcome…..it. all.

all the wrecking i’ve done, the messes i’ve made, the sin i’ve lived each day with this brood who shares this place of no hiding.

i have never wanted to wound, these ones i love so much it hurts.  but wound i do.  and sin. and they do it too.  there is no formula to make us immune-no vaccine that we can take to stop the poison.

But God.

He stops it.

personally.

specifically.

lovingly.

Powerfully.

dare i admit that sometimes i feel like giving up?  both in the washing of the sheets and the washing of my heart?

But God.

He comes and He stops up the poison, and He bandages up the wounds, and He gives strength to say i am sorry and will you forgive me and i love you.  He keeps working out His plan for me….and for them.

He overcomes powerfully.

 and we keep at this family thing.

i keep at this parenting thing.

because He is helping me to believe

He is God Almighty

El Elohe Israel

Mighty is the God of Israel.

Hope building and The Silver Chair

ok, so i didn’t know this would be a series….i didn’t know the interlude posts would be one either.

it is just like Jesus, to answer my questions/prayers this way.  daily and over time.

today, i didn’t know the kids would pick C.S. Lewis’ The Silver Chair to listen to (via FOTF’s Radio Theatre)  (are you catching the theme of how much i just don’t know??)

The Silver Chair is my most favorite.  for me-the most hope building.

Jill makes so many mistakes.  from the very beginning-mistake!  absolutely, her journeys would be easier without all these mistakes.  yet the beauty of it is that Aslan helps her along the way anyway.  and his help is all the more precious partnered with the mistakes.

every time i listen to this one, hope builds.  principles of the realities of life shine.  gems like…

Jill: “I bet we sleep well tonight.”

Narrator “Which just shows how little anyone knows what is going to happen to them next”

so if you are in need of a burst of hope-pick up The Silver Chair for a good read (or listen).  actually, if i think about it, i’d say pick up any of the 7 books.  For there are treasures in all of them, and maybe the gem you need is in a different one?

and in those treasures… hope to keep going builds.

what is interesting to me these last days is that just as hope begins to build, something happens to re-enforce the ‘logic’ in giving up.  the weight of impossibility threatens to engulf.

i feel like i’m on a see-saw.

Yet, like Aslan and Jill…..

Jesus keeps bringing His help along the way.

and it is all the more precious partnered with my desperate need for it.

Hope…part 2

reflecting on yesterday’s post, it reads a bit more pollyanna than i intended.

you see, He’s taken me far with grasping His deep deep love for me.  Amy Carmichael’s words; (found in her book; “Rose from Briar”) “Thy Calvary stills all my questions” applies to my questions about His love.  He proved it-He settled it.

but my hope issues of late, they’ve been related to His power, not His love.

Amy once wrote in one of her books about a dream.  people were stumbling over the edge of a cliff to their death.  where there were Christians linked in arm at the edge of the cliff, the people were being stopped.  but where there were holes in the chains, the people were stumbling over.

Emily Freeman wrote recently about lifeguards.

it’s so freeing to recognize that i have been assigned only a portion of the pool….or the cliff.

but what i’ve forgotten is that if the people in my world step over me-or get out of the pool and go home, Jesus is bigger than all of that.

this was me….

The whole head is sick
And the whole heart is faint.
From the sole of the foot even to the head
There is nothing sound in it,
Only bruises, welts and raw wounds,
Not pressed out or bandaged,
Nor softened with oil.
(Isaiah 1)

Jesus plucked me out.  He did it.  He bound and healed my wounds, soothed them with Himself.  He’s broken patterns of thinking and living.  and He’s teaching me all about joy.

but what about when the ones i love dearly, they want none of it?  they remain with their bruises, welts and raw wounds….refusing bandages and the soothing oil of the Father?

i begin to feel like satan is winning.  and that sucks away my hope.  i forget Jesus’ power.

then my pastor shared this story-it’s just a story, (i can’t tell if it’s true- there is a real painting, but no matter-the point is what i needed either way.)  …and it struck again to the question i’ve been asking even tho i hadn’t formed it into words.

the painting shows satan as the winner-checkmate.  the man-lost and desparing.  the way Gary told it; upon further study a man declared; “It’s a lie!  the king and the knight still have moves left!”

the winner is Christ.  and He still has moves left.  in the lives of those i love-He still has moves left.  they may or may not involve me.  i may or may not get to see them.  but no matter.  i just needed to remember…..

the hope of His calling

His incomparably great power for us who believe.  That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand….  (ephesians 1)

it feels quite foolish, shameful even to have lost sight of how mighty my God is.  but it’s the truth, i did.

the grief over the losses is still there.  but grief with hope is quite a different thing than grief without hope.  He grieves too.

He rescued me.  He continues to rescue me.  it is not hopeless.

thank you Mighty God.

He came to bind up the brokenhearted, bring good news to the poor, release captives from prison, to soothe wounds with the oil of joy in place of mourning.  (isaiah 61) His resurrection proves that His ways of doing this are victorious.

There is hope. Christ still has moves left.

He indeed has risen.  that is His best move ever!

chess game

Hope

grieving over all who are missing it.  who don’t have it.  and struggling myself to hold on to it.

that’s how this day started.

and then.

Since Christ is risen…..

Hope!

His death proves His love, His resurrection proves His power.

if He can conquer death…..

Hope!

Corrie Ten Boom learned that there is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.

and Emily over at chattingatthesky put it this way:

‘the companionship of Jesus goes deeper still.”

ahh….Hope!

He whisper’s to my heart; “I Know….it. all. I’ve still got more moves* left.”

(*thinking of chess/checkmate)

This is not the end.  it’s lifting…. growing…. returning…..

Glorious Hope

hope deferred

they all walked away. consumed with grief.

and hope?  it vanished.

he is dead.  we had hoped.

i sat there this year at our tenebrae service and i could not help but remember last year.  last year i had sat with 3 people i had only known for 5 days.  we had given food and shelter to others for that week, but these 3-something different was happening.  these came to the service.  and then spent 2 hours following the service asking me questions, and i opened up the scriptures and talked and listened. and went to bed amazed at what i just watched God do….with this vessel that is me. amazed that He allowed me to participate.  and then spent this past year pouring out my heart, my life, my love.  hoping they. would. know. Him.

last night i sat there and the seats next to me were empty.  these 3-they chose not to return to this place.  i had hoped.

Jesus.  he spent 3 years with those 12. opening up the scriptures. explaining. pouring out his heart, his life, his love.  hoping they. would. know. Him.

today is the day of sitting in this place of hope deferred.  feeling it. grieving.

 i know, i know there is the rest of the story.  but i don’t want to go there yet.  i want to stay in this place for a while. ponder. reflect.

the psalms say something like this; “hope deferred makes the heart sick”

the truth is, my heart has been growing in this sickness for a while.  those 3 aren’t the only ones for whom ‘i had hoped.’  there are more, and i am one of them.

i read the other day on flowerpatchfarmgirl’s blog about wonder.

i think this heart sickness is related to a loss of wonder.

and i have asked for its return.

sitting here in this place, its my Emmaus road.  i’m walking it with my risen Lord, but i’m blind like those disciples.  i don’t know that by tomorrow’s celebration of the rest of the story i will have moved on or not.  i just know for today. (this day bewteen friday and sunday)

he is dead. i had hoped.

Christ came to them in that place.  He met them there.

Please come and open my eyes to Your Wonder……

….right here with empty seats.

Passover…and He never lets go

this playing

dishes sudsing

energy given for the washing

artist girl creating for school

trip to the library set 2 boys to reading

silent night, holy night, all. is. calm.

it’s been crazy around here

for such a long long time.

we missed passover last year when we spent the whole Holy week serving

and stood in awe at what the One who never lets go grasped hold of….

letting us participate-fear and trembling all the way.

now, the anniversary- oh what a year-barely time for breathing.

and i sat exhausted in this place yesterday. pleading.

pleading for energy to not give up on our thursday passover seder*

the kids. oh how they love it.  oh the depth it adds.  oh the work.

breathe in grace to just pick up a rotisserie, throw in some frozen broccoli and call the meal done.

knowing its all the other pieces that take. us. deep.

choosing to fit it in.

i hate that.

it feels like we are choosing to fit remembrance of You into living for You….(or is it living for us?)

exhaustion is never a good time for figuring these things out.

so tonight.  i breathe deep.  breathe in the calm.  praise for the energy to wash up…

and to actually bake something. (is apple pie kosher??)

praise for the prayers answered…i almost missed it-forgetting i’d prayed, forgetting what i asked for, and the moment almost passed me by without notice.

but it didn’t.  You opened my eyes and let me see this….

silent night, holy night.

all is calm, all is bright.

You came.  You passed-over.

You never let go.

*not an affiliate link- just the kit i bought years ago.

Same

 we are the same, you and me.

you long for the skin-scratching momma of yours to be free from dying the slow and painful death she is inflicting on herself.

i long for the medal-collecting daddy of mine to be free from living the slow and painful life he is inflicting on himself.

they are both addicts-just addicted to different things.

and we are daughters, you and me.  who just wanted our parents to parent us. we have holes and they have holes and we’re all just broken.

but then i ponder about what is different.  and i feel like a great big fool for even thinking i am the same.  i the one who complains about washing peed-in sheets for the umpteenth time and 2 days without a toilet. You just long for a home to wash sheets in….and then when it comes, just something to sit on-any random apparatus will do–  and i think–how offensive for me to even think we are the same-i have so so much more.  and i accept the challenge “to stand in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it.”

but the hole is the same, and the sin struggle is the same, and the brokenness is the same.

the need for Jesus is the same.

i am just a fool.  and i have no clue how to love well.

it all gets tangled up and complicated spinning a web inside my head.

and if i sit in the web long enough-i make vows to myself not to come your way again, just to stay away because i’m just making it all worse.  we are so different after all.

then my real Father comes to me.  and He whispers; “it never was about you loving well, relating well.

duh.  (yes, i do think He says ‘duh’ to me)

just love.

this friend I’ve given you.

because I love you the same.”

Lead up the Rock

it was a difficult week.  serving ones perceived ungrateful-but in all actuality-hurt.

before i was given the privilage to actually understand, i wanted out.  i questioned-why are we doing this?  what is the point?  it is not that i expect a certain appreciation for our ‘work’, or even to have some ‘100 fold fruit’.  but what i do expect is that our ‘work’ will not enable.  will not contribute to satan’s work in their lives.  and i haven’t always been sure.  so when it appears that the people we are serving–are ungrateful,  it makes me think they aren’t being helped by my kindness (sometimes helping actually hurts)-and maybe we have made things too comfortable.  maybe what is needed is a reality check.

but when what is actually happening is hurt–that is different.  kindness and comfort are just what is called for when hurt, isn’t it?

again i remember-i prayed before, during.  my responses and interactions were prayed over.  but i don’t trust it still.  and in Your kindness-right at the very end-You grant understanding.  and i see–the response was actually what was needed.  and i remember to stop doubting and believe.  what i don’t know…. is what it is You are communicating….how it is Your Spirit is translating….what good You are bringing about by my perceived failure.  and really-where was i when You laid the foundations of the earth?  (translated-Jesus doesn’t’ owe me insight or understanding-it’s grace that He gives it at all)

~~~~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~
forward a couple of weeks.  a conversation comes on the craziest of days.  one i’m not prepared for and have no time for. i speak into a heart who knows You not.  i shoot up prayers of help in the conversation and the words-they just come.  and again i doubt.  was that portion* of the gospel what was really needed?  did the truth break through or did i just muddy the waters and enable this one to continue on the path apart from You?  conversation over, moving on into the tasks of this crazy/craziest day.  pleading, pleading in the car for You to break through.  will you give me insight this time to see that it was what was needed?  probably not.  but will i remember once again to trust?  trust that You are communicating-Your Spirit is translating?
*for it seems most often it’s pieces of the gospel handed out one morsel at a time….
~~~~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~

what is it that i really want? am i still not free from the chains of ‘getting it right?’  the chains of forgetting Who. You. Are.   that Who. You. Are. is sufficient-for their needs and mine?

~~~~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~
i take a “walk break”.  a day comes that affords me some quiet.  and i sit. in. Your. Presence.
words pierce through-pierce through the fog that is threatening to engulf me. today i am giving into it….sort of.  letting it come.  shutting the door.  sitting before the One who gave all for love of me.  reading and reading and reading.  but it is all just blurred and jumbled in the fog.  still tired….exhausted really.  still under pressure, far beyond my ability.  and guilt for even thinking that in light of pressure that exists elsewhere.  ….and loss of joy.  joy engulfed in this fog, i grasp for it.
until the piercing words.
“therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart…..and even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing….but we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us….”
~~~~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~

taking this ‘one minute walk amidst of the 3 minute run’.  it’s restoring the joy.  restoring the freedom that comes when i remember; being this cracked pot that i am shows that the all-surpassing power is from God and not me.

for when my heart is overwhelmed within-He leads me to the Rock that is higher than i.  that Rock who laid the foundations of the earth.
